The Great Welsh Revival began in 1904. Apparently the turn of the century created an unusual concern for spiritual matters and sparked what has been described as a revival prayer movement that was world wide. In November of 1904 the Spirit of God began to move and stir hearts in Wales. Within 5 months, 100,000 new converts had been added to the churches in Wales. The gambling and alcohol industries lost trade. Taverns and brothels had to close. People paid off their outstanding debts. Sporting events were postponed and canceled due to lack of interest. Judges had no cases to try. The illegitimate birth rate declined by 44 percent. Even the mules in the mines were impacted as they had to be retrained because the coalminers no longer used profanity when giving orders! What began in Wales spread abroad in just a few short months. On January 20, 1905, the Denver Post reported on the front page that the entire city was closing down at noon each day for prayer. In Portland, Oregon, 240 department stores signed a pact agreeing to close their doors each day from 11:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. so that their employees and customers could attend prayer meetings.
Can you say, “Do it again, Lord?” Our God is no less able to change hearts and move entire cities than He was 100 years ago. But first we must have a revived church. A revived church consists of revived individuals. The question is, “Are we willing to do what it takes for the church to be revived?”
The psalmist said, “You who seek God, let your hearts revive” (Psalm 69:32). Will we seek Him? Will EFBC seek revival? Will you seek Him? Will you lead your family to seek Him? One person, one family, one small group, one church; that is committed to seeking the Lord can become a part of a movement of God and a spiritual awakening that touches the lives of many.
